Hello friends, Well… it’s been another eventful week here in the US and globally. In the midst of it all, I’m sure you’ve gone to work, worried about money or family or friends, dropped children off at school, cared for your elders, bought groceries… all of the ordinary things in life. I’m sure some of you have also been to community safety trainings, or attended vigils. Some of you have escaped for an hour or two into books, music, movies, or long walks. And that’s what we do, in unprecedented times. We keep living and simultaneously do our best try to put out the conflagrations sparking around us. Some of us also create and make magic. In my Patreon this year, one of the things we’re working on is a Spell of the Month. This week was supposed to be Part Two of our first spell of the year: Dreaming. Instead, I realized we needed a 1.5, to figure out how to even work toward what we desire when things feel so dangerously acute. Here’s part of what I wrote, in case it’s helpful: “Spell work and manifestation do not have to be wholly selfish endeavors. In fact, they ought not to be. The more we recognize our interdependence with every being in the cosmos, the better our spells will work. When we work magic from a sense of isolation, that tends to make us desperate. Desperation can be a breakthrough for some, offering a burst of energy to power our wishes. But for many of us, desperation causes constriction, and constriction in turn, impedes the flow of energy and magic. Take another breath. Adjust your posture for a freer flow of oxygen through your body. Drop your shoulders and engage your core. As you breathe, let your current fears and insecurities lighten, if only for the next ten minutes. As you breathe, allow your dreams and desires to enter, filling you once again.” We can dream of a better world, my friends, for each other and for ourselves. The more we envision what we desire, the easier it becomes to build that, over time. Dreaming is necessary, now, and always. We must dream, then act. Together. Best wishes — Thorn

Hello friends, This week, I am at the Between the Worlds/Sacred Space joint conference, gathered with hundreds of people who believe that magic is possible in a troubled world. It’s an important reminder, especially when so many of us feel stuck just providing for our basic needs, or the needs of our families. It is also an important reminder for those of us engaged in community service, protection, and care. Magic helps me pay attention to what is important to me. It helps me manifest what I...
Hello friends, I’ve been angry since childhood. Therefore, I think a lot about love. Seem strange? Like a contradiction? Not so much. My anger has always been rooted in a sense of injustice, on scales both minuscule and large. And that sense of injustice comes from love. When we create from love, we change. When we fight injustice because we love, we change. We change ourselves and each other, and over time, we change the course of things. This morning, a friend sent a bell hooks quote, from...
Hello friends, The great writer Octavia Butler once replied to a student asking about ending the world’s suffering, “There’s no single answer that will solve all of our future problems. There’s no magic bullet. Instead there are thousands of answers—at least. You can be one of them if you choose to be.” Often hailed as a prophet for her science fiction works, Butler insisted that she simply studied history and extrapolated a possible future from that—often recent—past. Many of us saw the...
