Faeries Dancing

Hello friends,

On a walk in the soft rain of the atmospheric river that just arrived to the Pacific Northwest, I saw two small maple trees whose leaves had already turned orange-red. Some of the maples in the neighborhood are still green, or just turning yellow, but these two were in full autumnal celebration mode.

So, of course I walked across the street to get a closer look. When I looked up, I was delighted at the display. The leaves looked like ethereal dancers, turning this way and that, as the rain pattered on their broad, upturned palms.

And there it was: a bit of magic.

Stop doom scrolling.

Yes, we need to keep up on the news so we are better prepared to help each other out. But we don’t need the constant influx of outrage into our brains at all hours of the day.

Life is hard enough without jacking up our nervous systems by pressing the stimulation button every thirty seconds.

There are faeries dancing in the sky! When we pause long enough to take a breath, we just might see them.

When we pause long enough to take a breath, we see each other. We see the beauty in the world. We remember what a gift it is to be alive.

In doing so, we not only make our own lives better, we allow ourselves space to rest, strengthen, and grow. That enables us to help in the ways we best know how. Constant stress eventually wears us down, finally breaking us, so we cannot show up for anyone, even in times of dire need.

So today, I hope you take a breath. I hope you remember to notice small moments of magic.

Speaking of magic, over on my Patreon, I cooked up a sigil of plenty and protection along with an explanation. Our communities need a bit of both plenty and protection right now. I made that post free, and hope you check it out and share it with a friend.

Best wishes — Thorn

A big slate heart stepping stone and a green soled boot.

Hello friends, I was at a magical event with old friends and new last weekend, in the woods of Northern California. In some parts of space were big hearts made of slate slabs. The thing I liked about these hearts were that: Being made of slate, the hearts could support weight. Someone had taken the time and effort to carve the shapes. The hearts had clearly been nestled in the earth for years, greeting everyone who walked by. All of this was a reminder to me that a little inspiration and...

Two small deer

Hello friends, I’m in the woods right now, with a group of friends, both old and new. There are deer here, small, gentle ones with large ears. The deer keep their distance, but not so far that I cannot read the glint in their eyes, or catch the curious fan of those ears. These deer are not tame. They just live in a world where the potential for harm is slim. For deer to live so unafraid means this is a sheltered place. A place they have learned to be slightly wary of the lumbering, two legged...

screenshot of Sushi Scandal with a thumbs up, and review from Library Writers Project Selection: “A nice addition to the cozy mystery genre as well as a good read for those looking for stories set in queer utopias.”

Hello friends, I write this from Portland, Oregon, which is under threat from the US Federal Government right now. This week, as the political landscape looks worse than ever, I’m choosing to celebrate small victories and cultivate pleasure. One: The first tiny victory I’d like to share is that, when I logged into my Libby Library app looking for ebooks to read, I found that a kind librarian had given my book Sushi Scandal a thumbs up and sweet recommendation! This lifted my heart and made me...
