Faeries Dancing

Hello friends,

On a walk in the soft rain of the atmospheric river that just arrived to the Pacific Northwest, I saw two small maple trees whose leaves had already turned orange-red. Some of the maples in the neighborhood are still green, or just turning yellow, but these two were in full autumnal celebration mode.

So, of course I walked across the street to get a closer look. When I looked up, I was delighted at the display. The leaves looked like ethereal dancers, turning this way and that, as the rain pattered on their broad, upturned palms.

And there it was: a bit of magic.

Stop doom scrolling.

Yes, we need to keep up on the news so we are better prepared to help each other out. But we don’t need the constant influx of outrage into our brains at all hours of the day.

Life is hard enough without jacking up our nervous systems by pressing the stimulation button every thirty seconds.

There are faeries dancing in the sky! When we pause long enough to take a breath, we just might see them.

When we pause long enough to take a breath, we see each other. We see the beauty in the world. We remember what a gift it is to be alive.

In doing so, we not only make our own lives better, we allow ourselves space to rest, strengthen, and grow. That enables us to help in the ways we best know how. Constant stress eventually wears us down, finally breaking us, so we cannot show up for anyone, even in times of dire need.

So today, I hope you take a breath. I hope you remember to notice small moments of magic.

Speaking of magic, over on my Patreon, I cooked up a sigil of plenty and protection along with an explanation. Our communities need a bit of both plenty and protection right now. I made that post free, and hope you check it out and share it with a friend.

Best wishes — Thorn

A white rose blooms between the squares of a chain link fence, lit by autumn sun.

Hello friends, This morning, the rose city of Portland Oregon is shrouded in fog. Just yesterday afternoon, I walked in cool, crisp air and autumn sunlight. Tomorrow, it will rain. And such is life… days shifting from sun to fog to rain and back again. This past week, very little work has gotten done. Well, not the work on my schedule. Not the emails that need answering or the novel I’m almost finished writing. Not getting necessary paperwork to the book keeper. Not the ordering of books for...

Embroidery stapled to a utility pole: Love People on Purpose

Hello friends, The REM song “Hold On” is playing through my head this week. Partially because, after years of trying, someone in my family couldn’t hold on any longer, finally succumbing to a host of illnesses they just could not shake. The song is also with me because of the sheer number of people struggling right now. Struggling to simply survive. Whether because they don’t have money for food or rent, or lost their job, or struggle with mental or physical health, or they are under attack...

Palm trees, blue sky, and a Ferris wheel

Hello friends, This will be a short missive because I've been in Las Vegas all week, at the big Author Nation business conference and the big Reader Nation book fair. While Vegas is not my favorite place—an understatement. I actually find it very trying—I travel here to learn. I travel here to get out of that proverbial comfort zone. It is good for me to stretch myself, body, spirit, and mind. Sometimes, in order to learn, we must cast ourselves into the strange and challenging... And let me...
