Hello friends, We’re in the dark months here in the northern hemisphere. This is the time when many people kindle extra light. Those lights are beacons of hope, tiny stars brought down to earth. We all have an inner light, as well. A light that connects us with others. The light of creativity and kindness. But some days, we’re too tired to shine. Some days, we’re too afraid to shine. Some days, we feel too beaten down to shine. And that’s okay. Darkness is a time of rest, as well. It’s okay to cocoon ourselves when we need to. If we don’t take rest and respite, over time, our light burns out. This especially happens to those who feel they must shine on command. One change I’ll be making this winter is taking conscious, regular days off, rather than waiting until I “really need one.” Now, I have the luxury of working for myself, but this also means that most times I work seven days a week, even if some of those days are only for a couple of hours. I need to give myself a break, in order to be able to offer my light. What is your life like? Are you shining naturally and brilliantly right now? Are you flickering intermittently? Do you hide your light? Do you share your light with a few, trusted friends? Whatever your pattern is, now might be a good time to revisit it. Make a choice. Don’t shine or hide by habit or because of expectations. It’s your light. It’s your life. Shine when you have light to spare. How about you? Best wishes — Thorn

Hello friends, This past week, I attended an online class from author business coach Becca Syme. She's super insightful, and spoke to us about emotional regulation when world events or business disasters have us spinning. Each morning, she goes through these four phrases, and fills in the blanks: I feel happy that... I feel grateful that... I feel hopeful that... I feel secure that... Becca lives in Minnesota and almost canceled our talk because things in her immigrant-filled neighborhood...
Hello friends, Well… it’s been another eventful week here in the US and globally. In the midst of it all, I’m sure you’ve gone to work, worried about money or family or friends, dropped children off at school, cared for your elders, bought groceries… all of the ordinary things in life. I’m sure some of you have also been to community safety trainings, or attended vigils. Some of you have escaped for an hour or two into books, music, movies, or long walks. And that’s what we do, in...
Hello friends, It is early January. Another Gregorian calendar year. Outside my window, the sun shines after rain. Wisps of grey clouds hover low, kissing utility wires. It’s gorgeous outside, and feels still. The air is cold and soft with moisture. Crows call to one another, cars drive by. Tea steams its fragrance at my side. Today is another day to ponder, work, and plan. Today is another day to choose. What will you choose, repeatedly, this year? What do you plan? What might you build?...
